Snake of the Day 10-14-14

Show & Tell

Anery VISUAL-HET Palmetto corn snake.  Visual-Het mutants of the incomplete-dominant Palmetto mutation have a phenotype that’s distinct from that of wild-type corns.  Even this Anery corn has more of the distinctive tan coloration and hypo-esque appearance common to non-color-mutant F1 out-crosses, than its non-Palmetto Het counterparts. . . .

2015 Spring project involving these two GRANITE Gray-banded Kingsnakes (Lampropeltis alterna) is highly anticipated. Left to right, female/male.  It’s possible that Granite Gray-bands originated from Brewster County, TX locality stock, but have been polygenetically refined to predictably reproduce the namesake look of the above female.  THANKS, MIKE ! ! !

I have not yet proven the mode of inheritance for this beauty, but soon will.  I believe this to be a Red Mask Amel, but more breeding trials are required.  Regardless, it will be worthy of morphship, so once I discover the mode of inheritance, I’ll give it a name (even if it is turns out to be a polygenetic extreme-red version of Amelanistic)?    . . .

Thank you, Pete Quinlin, for these mother & son Gray-banded Kingsnakes (Lampropeltis alterna).  The adult mother of this leucistic Gray-band is obviously het for leucism.  Her phenotype suggests that like most leucistic serpent mutants, she is a Visual Het of a mutation that is incompletely-dominant to wild type.  In other words, with one copy of the paired gene mutation, she has a look that is generally distinguishable from the nominate form of her species (faded scales in and around the orange markings).  Yes, we realize that Gray-banded kings are a relatively young species since they are so generally polymorphic, in so much as Gray-bands have been captured with this look that were surely not het. for leucism.  Both of these snakes were displayed on our tables at the recent NARBC Reptile Expo last last month in Arlington, Texas.

Theories/explanations welcomed.  On the left–in Chip Bridges’ hand–is the picture he sent after this amazing Scaleless corn hatched.  Pic’d on right is the same snake as it appeared when it arrived here a few weeks ago.  Chip said it changed from “blue” to what we see toDAY in the first week or two of its life.  W H Y  ? ? ?
