Macro view of the head scales on the Cayenne Fire featured on February 5, two DAYs ago.  Aberrant–or even missing–Frontal Scales (bell-shaped center scale) is not exceedingly rare in corns, but this one demonstrates that the aberrancy also impacts adjacent scales whose peripheral shapes usually match those of adjunct scales.  In some cases, missing or aberrant head scales are the result of a gene mutation.  Bonus pic

Comparison shot of one of our potentially new mutations, an as-yet unnamed red-modifying gene.  Breeding trials are on-going to identify the mode of inheritance.  The lower snake in this picture is a somewhat typical Amelanistic mutant.  Both are neonates (under 1.5 years of age).  It is obvious that there is nothing new about red markings on an Amel mutant, but what is new (for a non Diffused mutant) is the nearly matching red ground color.  Members of this “?gene mutation?” so far have matured to be even more red than this one, so we expect this one to also be more deeply red at maturity.

Brother and sister–one year apart–the larger is a p/s OLD-SCHOOL Bloodred (VERY low white) and a Cayenne Fire from the South African Line.  The Fire (Amel) will be much redder in one year and will continue to redden for another few years thereafter, representing the reddest corn snake mutation in the hobby, Cayenne Fire.
