Snake of the Day 11-18-17

Show & Tell

A relatively common color morph for its species, Gray-banded Kingsnake, Lampropeltis alterna, but a very UNcommon color scheme for snakes of any other species on this planet.  This one is commonly referred to as a medium-phase (between Light Phase and Dark Phase).  Further, it’s morph/phase used to be called BLAIR’s, to denote that it did not possess the alternating markings between triads that the Alterna Morphs exhibit.  The first Alterna I collected in the wild was a dark phase on Pandale Dirt Road near Langtry, Texas, in 1973.  A very unforgettable moment in my life.  A common species in the snake hobby toDAY, collecting them at night in the deserts of Texas and New Mexico is not as easy as it sounds.  They are very rarely found in the wild, compared to virtually any other species in Texas and New Mexico.  Bonus PIC . . .
