Snake of the Day 01-04-18ff

This 14″ male 2017 Super Striped Salmon Snow corn snake is currently eating frozen/thawed pinky mice. He is considered a SUPER because he demonstrates exaggerated red/pink coloration from possessing both of the paired gene mutation copies of the dominant-to-wild-type gene mutation, Red Factor.

                                                        Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr . . . . .
SMR will not be shipping ANY packages this week (01-01-18—01-05-18), largely because the transit point where all packages spend the night–the Memphis, TN sort facility–is dangerously cold for snakes.  Not inherently dangerous–since we use heat packs–but because of the potential for flight delays that are related to inclement weather conditions?  We’ll watch weather forecasts for next week, and expressly contact customers who are waiting for their orders, regarding the status of respective delivery dates.  Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Thank you, Darren Bennett (DGB Geckos in Scotland) for permission to publish your photograph of these stunning Trans-pecos Ratsnakes (Bogertophis subocularis) you hatched.  It is my understanding that this pattern-less “mutant” is the only one to hatch thus far?  The potential is exciting that this is an associative mutation–but surely not linked to the Striped mutation of this species–that could be reproducible?  OR are the Striped mutants actually Visual-hets for the Homozygote (aka: Super) form of a pattern-less mutation of this species?   At a glance, these siblings could be demonstrating that the pattern-less specimen is the result of a mutation that essentially removes most (or perhaps all–in some cases) melanin??  Hence, not simply a pattern mutation, but a color mutation, or both??  Only breeding trials will answer these questions.

This 2016 male Amel Tessera corn snake is currently 29″ long, eating frozen/thawed hopper mice.  He is 66.6% possibly-het Scaleless, since both of his parents were het for Scaleless.

Ps, the colors suggest that it is het for Caramel (therefore, het Butter) but I cannot guarantee that.

Thank you. Andreas Bacchi for sending these beautiful 2017 Pied-sided Bloodred Motleys.  Like all Bloodreds, they don’t show much color at this age, but in the coming months, the neonatal colors will be slowly replaced by vibrant reds.  Bloodred and Motley mutations are known for enhancing colors, so I’m excited to see a synergistic exaggeration of colors in these snakes that are homozygotes for Bloodred, Motley AND Pied-sided.

Thank you, Darren Bennett (DGB Geckos in Scotland) for making it possible for me to own some of these gems that you discovered and reproduced.  I’ll be featuring pictures of more of them in the following weeks, months, years.  I can’t wait to add this pattern mutation to the others of this species.

HAPPY  NEW  YEAR’S  EVE

WOW, Brad, you sure can cook???   Thanks for this sibling pair of 2017 hatchlings I got from you this past ThursDAY; eXtreme Reverse Okeetee and eXtreme Ultramel Okeetee.  The eXtreme Ultramel Okeetee is surely about as close to looking albino as one can get.  I can’t wait to see the colors when mature.
