This compound morph results from combining the color mutations Amel Caramel = Butter and the pattern mutation, Motley. Color and pattern are variable, but it is apparent that the Motley mutation has a beneficial color impact upon the Butter corn’s coloration, and that impact is one of enhancement.  I don’t recall ever seeing Striped or Motley Butter corns that was not more deeply yellow than Butter corns without a pattern mutation.

 

What to expect:
Expect  most neonates to have surprisingly low-quality yellow (compared to adults), and pattern on some may actually be brown for up to a year or longer.  I have personally never seen one retain non yellow colors, so be patient.  In six to 18 months, all other colors should transform to yellow.  The pattern mutation, Motley demonstrates its power when combined with butter by heavily saturating and otherwise improving the yellow – compared to non-Motley Butters.

Reverse Okeetee-12

Reverse Okeetee (aka: Amel Okeetee, Albino Okeetee)

Reverse Okeetees are variants of the basic Amel Mutation, so their only visual distinction from corns is their polygenetic color and pattern scheme.  Genetically speaking, Reverse Okeetees are Amel corns that have been selectively bred to promote their target look (Highly saturated blotch colors, separated from clean and unspeckled ground coloration by prominent white blotch margins). Red or orange markings are not difficult to reproduce through generational line breeding, but the quality and size of the white blotch margins is often difficult to achieve, and sometimes difficult to maintain through subsequent generations.  The degree of color purity in the orange background and red (or orange) markings have been enhanced via polygenetic traits, modified through selective promotion of only the best target phenotypes. Some will exhibit color “clutter” in these zones, but a distinction between Reverse Okeetees and most Amel corns should be a dramatic reduction in color “noise” — rendering richer colors of blotch and ground color zones. 


 

What to expect:

Reverse Okeetees are one of the few corn snake mutations that change very little between neonate and adult, so expect some deeper color saturation throughout maturity.  The often “neutrally colored” blotch margins turn bright white throughout maturity.  I don’t recall ever seeing one that was completely devoid of color litter in the pattern and ground zones, but we’re getting closer to that  with  each generation. Some of the hatchlings displaying orange markings mature to have redder markings, and some of those starting with red markings change to orange, but approximately 75% of all our red ones stay red, and about the same percentage of the orange marked ones stay orange.

Charcoal-12

Charcoal (aka: anery B, Pine Island Anery)

The second anerythristic-type mutation discovered in corn snakes (Anery A was the first), Charcoal corns were originally named Pine Island Aneries for the origin of the first one to be discovered on Pine Island – off the Florida Coast.  Originally mis-perceived to be a variant of the Anery A mutation, the first one was bred to a Snow corn in a presumed effort to discern if the mutation was related to Anery A?  Subsequent generational results demonstrated that this was not an allele of the first anerythristic-type corn; Anery A.  There, if you breed a single-mutant Anery to a single-mutant Charcoal, you will get all wild-type progeny (presuming there were no other gene mutation copies common to both parents. 

Many of the original Charcoal corns lacked facial and lateral yellow.  Yellow was not common in the first generations of this morph, since early specimens apparently lacked the dietary carotenoid yellow trait/mutation common in most Anery corns.  Even toDAY, some Charcoal and Blizzard (Amel Charcoal) corns are devoid of yellow as adults, but in so much as that original specimen was quickly bred to a Snow corn upon discovery, the carotenoid retention gene(s) is annoyingly persistent in most family lines of Charcoals and Blizzards.  Breeding trials to identify the mechanics and inheritance of the carotenoid retention gene(s) are on-going.

 

What to expect:
Possibly one of the most unchanging of all corns in the realm of appearance from hatchling to adult, neonates have an overall gray or bluish appearance.  Neonates often have a blush of pink or lavender around the sides of the face and neck, and some of those carry that color to adulthood.  Whether the one you get will mature to have yellow (or won’t), never expect to see yellow on neonates.  One obvious distinction between Anery and Charcoal corns (neonate or adult) is in the realm of eye color.  In Anery corns, there is an obvious contrast between the iris and pupil of the eyes (usually black pupil surrounded by gray or silver iris).  Most Charcoal corns show little or no such contrast, having the same jet black pupils of Anery corns, but a much darker and sometimes equally black iris.  Throughout maturity, the eyes of both Anerys and Charcoals may change slightly, but and adults the distinction between hatchlings remains the same.  Most of my corn snakes that are genetically both Anery and Charcoal are phenotypically Charcoal.  I’ve spoken to other breeders that say some of their double mutants more closely resembled Anery types.

Candy Cane-12

The SMR Candy Cane is one of the few selectively-bred Amel mutations worthy of its own morph name. Genetically speaking, Candy Canes are Amel corns that have been selectively bred to promote their target look (red or orange blotches on a white background). They owe their morph status to early corn breeders that spent generations of pairing only Amels with the best white ground color and best red (or orange) markings – to create what we toDAY call Candy Canes. Since the only mutation they possess is Amel, the obvious distinction between Candy Canes and the average Amel corn is the obvious color scheme.  Red or orange markings are not difficult to reproduce through generational line breeding, but the white background color is very difficult to achieve (and maintain through subsequent generations).  The white background and red (or orange) markings have been enhanced via the selective promotion of the target appearance.  When breeding two Candy Canes together, because they are Amel mutants, you are assured of getting 100% Amel mutants, but factoring in the variability of the interactions between genes (polygenetics) means that not necessarily all the offspring will be marketable Candy Canes.  We cull out the ones that do not satisfy our quality standards for Candy Cane color and pattern, and those are usually sold as Amel corns.


What to expect:

As neonates, all Candy Canes are shockingly red or orange on white, but with maturity, the white ground color becomes littered with a pale red or an orange blush – relegated mostly to the front part of the body.  I don’t recall ever seeing one that was completely devoid of color litter over the entire ground zones, but we’re getting closer to that  with  each generation. Some of the hatchlings displaying orange markings mature to have redder markings, and some of those starting with red markings change to orange.  About 75% of all our red ones stay red, and about the same percentage of the orange marked ones stay orange. If our High White Reverse Okeetee corns did not have such thick white borders, they would be perfect candy canes.

At first glance, Caramel mutants are not usually attractive – since gold or brown color actions of this gene mutation essentially replace the rich red tones predominant in most corn snakes. Aside from their general appearance, the Caramel mutation has some unusual genetic properties (compared to most recessively inherited corn snake gene mutants), but this mutation is essential if you wish to eventually create yellow corns. The most notably atypical characteristic of this mutation is that of heterozygous (Het for short) Caramels often displaying mutation markers (exhibiting traits of the homozygous phenotypes). It is not typical for out-crossed F1 corns to show markers of their gene mutation, but from pairing a Caramel corn to a non-mutant corn of any other color and/or pattern, most of the out-crossed F1 progeny will exhibit a blush of gold or yellow as neonates. In other words, most of the first generation babies will not look like typical wild-type corns. As adults, most corns that are Het for caramel are easily distinguishable from Hets of virtually all other F1 recessive out-crosses, but since this is not always the case, the co-incidental caramel coloration is thought to be the result of polygenic traits derived from the first non-mutant corns that were paired with Caramel types. If this is the case, it demonstrates the power of polygenetic forces by the persistence to show these colors after hundreds of out-crossings – since the late 1980s when this mutation was first discovered.

 

What to expect:
Caramel mutants are relatively lackluster, when compared to some of their compound products (i.e. Butters and Ambers ). There are still other corn snake mutations (both color and pattern) whose out-crossed progeny will have modified appearance when paired with Caramel mutants, so do not be afraid to mix this seemingly “lazy” genetic color mutation with other corn snake mutations. Like most corn snake mutants, both adult and neonate Caramels are highly variable, spanning the color spectrum from brown to gold, and some even exhibit green tones. As neonates, many Caramels are similar to hatchling Anery corns, but as they mature, the typical caramel coloration slowly manifests. Some of our lines have obvious blotch borders, but most have borders that are barely discernible and some have no blotch borders.

The genetic product of combining the Amel and Caramel recessive mutations render the ultimate expression of yellow in corns. Both color and pattern are variable in hue and shades, but all adults demonstrate what is left when the Amel mutation removes melanin from the Caramel mutation; YELLOW.


What to expect:

This compound morph results from combining the color mutations Anery, Hypo, and the pattern mutation, Bloodred.  As with most morph compounds that include Bloodred, the Ghost bloodred mutation‘s color effect is greatly diffused (markings often barely visible), but unlike the red eyes on the Fire Corn, the pupils of most Hypo Bloods are black.  Occasionally, one will have reddish-black pupils, but unless red in the pupil is being seen under strong light, pupils are almost always black.  Except for some of the color and pattern variants of this mutation compound, some Hypo Bloods have such diminished melanin that they are indistinguishable from Fire Corns (except for eye color).


What to expect:
Many Ghost Bloodred hatchlings are pale versions of the Granite Corn (aka: Anery Bloodred), but their overall coloration is more pale – in the dramatic muted melanin. Males often have an overall pink/coral cast to them, but females usually stay within the Gray and Silver color schemes.

This compound morph results from combining the color mutations, Anery and Hypo with the pattern mutation Diffused.  As with most morph compounds that include the Diffused mutation, the Ghost Bloodreds mutation‘s color affect is generally more diffused than a typical Anery corn, and some are so hypomelanistic that their eyes are reddish in color (vs. the black pupil of the Anery Bloodred; aka Granite). What to expect:
Many Fire hatchlings look like little more than regular Amel Corns, but the head should have some form of Bloodred head pattern, and the belly will be devoid of classic Amel Corn snake white & off-white checkering.  The belly pattern can have colors – and even pattern – but not organized checkering.  From a short distance, adults appear to be completely red or red/orange, but upon closer examination, most have a faint blotch pattern, and some will have minute traces of white on the scales around the posterior-most dorsal markings.

Striped Sunglow 2012

Striped Sunglow (no aka)

Striped Sunglow corn snakes are the products of selectively breeding Amel corns toward the goal of intensifying the red/orange coloration and eliminating the white blotch borders & adding the recessive gene mutation Stripe.  .  Most have some white scales, but are generally two shades of the Amel color theme.

What to expect:
As hatchlings, they essentially appear to be typical Amel corns, with the exception of having little or no white on the borders between blotches and ground color zones.  Some Sunglow corns actually lose some of that white through maturation.  While we do not guarantee the extra gene mutation, we began our Sunglow line with Hypo corns, since our Hypos have such little black margins around the markings (which of course, translated to low white volume around the blotches of the Amel mutants in the line). Expect deeply saturated orange coloration and very little (if any) white scales between markings and ground color zones.
