The Axanthic mutation (meaning NO yellow) of the Western Hognose snake (Heterodon nasicus) is perhaps one of the prettiest monochromatic mutations in the snake hobby? Add the Anaconda mutation and you end up with a stunning combination. All U.S. hognose snakes are venomous, but they rarely bite humans, and their venom renders more of an allergic reaction than pain and visible tissue damage. Like most animals, Hognoses are creatures of habit, so once they get in the habit of a routine feeding regimen, when their cages are opened, most of them come out with mouths agape. They often don’t abandon that behavior until something is in their mouths, so don’t let that “something” be one or your fingers. Bonus PIC . . .
