 DAY051113aa
I just couldn’t resist grabbing the camera after opening this Palmetto Corn Snake’s cage to remove her shed skin.
What a great opportunity to get so much color in one tight shot.  When they are all stretched out, one cannot
appreciate how much color some of them display so I was happy to find her in repose inside her water bowl.

Coral Snow Corn
Male

32″ on April 18, 2013
$165.00 shipped

Comments:
The parents of this 32″ male Coral Snow were both Neon Champagnes.  I call this one a Coral Snow because Salmons, Neons, and Champagnes are all considered to be recognized families of the Coral Snow group (breeding any of them results in the same coral/pink general coloration).  Since she is the aggregate of two of the three popular families of Coral Snow types, I’m just calling her a Coral Snow.  This 32″ male is eating fren/thawed large fuzzy or small hopper mice.

 DAY051213
Virtually the opposite of the Palmetto Corn Mutant shown as yesterDAY’s SOTD feature,  this female not only demonstrates
fewer fragments of color, but some are clustered together, vs. the scattered, isolate, and random distribution of colors in most
Palmettos.   Many have asked if I’ve been able to identify any resemblance to the order of classic corn snake pattern in Palmettos.
Presumably, their question is directed toward the puzzle, “will any form of the Stripe or Motley pattern be visible when in concert with
Palmetto?”  Since we’re virtually certain the Palmetto is a variant of the Leucistic Mutation, and since Leucism generally trumps all traces
of other color or pattern in snakes (aka: Leucism masks whatever other colors and pattern are in the same genotype), I presume we cannot
trace any overlay of colors corresponding to the colors of pattern of other mutations or nominate forms.  This cluster-patterned Palmetto exhibits the
variability we see in many mutations (presumably polygentic in nature); no two alike.  Like a SOTD from a few DAYs ago, these eggs are not bright white but are
indeed fertile.  I don’t know of any paper that analyzes the reason why some eggs are not white, but it is perhaps the result of the shortage of or abundance of some mineral?

 DAY051313a
The eggs this Butter corn snake is in the process of laying are all inertile.  I did not allow a male to breed her this year,
so this is the result.  It is not uncommon for a female corn snake who was not bred to lay a few fertile eggs that were
insemenated from retained sperm along with mostly infertile eggs.  The appearance and texture of these eggs
demonstrate the marker for infertility.  Usually, eggs that remain damp and shiny for many hours, are infertile, vs.
most fertile eggs drying and losing their sheen within minutes of being laid.

Striped Motley Amel Sunrise
Female

33″ long on April 26, 2013

Comments
:  Superior color and market scarcity.  This snake should continue to get redder with maturity, but read below to find out what else will happen.

As hatchlings, Sunrise Amels reseble Snow corns with a full blush of orange.  Within a few weeks, they lose the Snow look, in favor of classic Amel appearance.  Then, in mere months, their reds and oranges deepen to the point of having the deepest color saturation seen in Amels.  Color continues to saturate (toward red) but after perhaps 16-24 months, Sunrise Amel mutants that are also pattern mutants transform in another way.  In pattern mutants (like these Striped and/or Motley) through maturity after 16-24 months, random and intermittent loss of pigment renders some scales dull white, but usually only on scales that border the pattern.  You may only see a few to dozens of scales lose pigment each year, but after a few years, the scales that are now pigment-less have relegated to pattern margins.  When striped pattern is involved the pigment-less configuration looks like scar tissue along the dorsum, like what you’d expect to see on an Striped Amel corn that barely escaped a rack unit, thereby scraping scales off their dorsum in the process.  In other words, a mature Striped-type Amel Sunrise mutant looks like it has a long and almost contiguous scar down the dorsum, either in the stripe field or bounding it.  Scar tissue on Amel corns is some shade of white, vs. scar tissue on non-Amels usually being black or dark gray.  Aside from the pigment-less stripe seen on Adult Amel Striped Motley Sunrise mutants, I believe the most attractive feature is their deeply orange-red coloration (vs. pale orange in most older Amel corns).  I do not know what Sunrise non-pattern mutants OR non-Amel Sunrise mutants look like, if they are distinct at all.  If anyone out there knows, I’d greatly appreciate seeing known Sunrise mutant pictires that are not Amels or pattern mutants.  Tony, if you’re reading this, get in touch with me (corn snakes@aol.com).  You may well be the only person who can solve this mystery for me.

To me, the most valuable genetic asset of this mutation – in terms of altering other mutations – is adding considerable red coloration to otherwise orange Amel-types.
