Show & Tell

Gravid Bloodred corn snake. The term OLD-SCHOOL is abused in our hobby. In the first decade (or two) of having Bloodreds in the hobby, they were naturally called simply “Bloodreds”. The term OLD SCHOOL has since been applied to Bloodreds that lack the red color saturation and luster that most modern Bloodreds possess. Factually, most of the original Bloodreds had an ontogenetic expression of longitudinal dark stripes that they developed after a few years of maturity. The diffusion of many was so good that some of those were dark red corns that exhibited only their almost-black dorso-lateral longitudinal stripes–and little or no other markings above their bellies. Back then, many wondered if some of the Landrace Bloodreds perhaps had some Yellow Ratsnake blood in them? I never subscribed to that theory, but was (and still am) puzzled by the development of those longitudinal stripes at maturity?
